Web Design Leicester – XML Sitemaps?
Posted by admin on July 27th, 2009
Most of us know that a user sitemap on a website lists all the pages and that you can use this as a way to navigate around. In itself this can be an aid to SEO.
So what is an XML sitemap?
XML sitemaps also list the WebPages within a site. However, they are not visible in the browser content of a website. Rather they are written into the website code with the specific purpose of helping to highlight WebPages to the search engines.
You can use an XML sitemap to prioritise each WebPage, ensuring the search engines index the most important pages first.
XML sitemaps are vital for new websites and sites that have content that is not easily indexed. But in our experience this is one element of optimising a website that is all too often missing, especially when the web owner has become lulled into believing only keywords or key phrases are important to the success of their SEO campaign.
An XML sitemap is just one of many examples of how important it is to optimise a website using all the SEO tools available, and why DIY search engine optimisation can only take you so far.
I know ‘I would say this, wouldn’t I’, but for really effective SEO you need to hand it to a professional who will apply all elements of SEO and has the time to consistently monitor the progress of an SEO campaign to ensure your website ranks as high as possible.
