What is Google Chrome?

Google Chrome (and it’s twin Chromium) is an open-source Browser that has recently been introduced by Google trying to muscle in on Microsoft’s IE8.  It has been optimised to run Web apps.

It has many features including: Application windows, Dynamic tabs, New Tab page, Crash control, Safe browsing and more.

As with the Google Toolbar , Chrome presents an opportunity for Google  to collect even more user behavioral data. Google state that Chrome is designed to make web browsing ” faster, safer and easier” and is for the benefit of web users, not to make money – we shall see!

Will Chrome affect the way users search?

The answer is yes.

Chrome has something called an Omnibox.  It’s a combination of a search box and an address bar.

Type in the box and it will give you a variety of results which include Web search, Web history, Address bar and Sponsored Ads.  It also offers Google suggestions which can be turned on or off.

Will Chrome affect SEO?

First we need to have an idea of how Google suggests the URL that appears in the results.

The results do not correlate with how pages appear in the Organic results or the Sponsored links results. Even WebPages that would not normally be visible in the results pages appear in the Omnibox.

Right now it seems Chrome doesn’t work in a way that can be targeted by SEO. The impact on SEO will become clearer as it’s developed further and we understand it better. After all the whole point of Chrome as stated by Google is to provide users with the most appropriate websites for their search terms.

What we do know is that the Omnibox will definitely increase the frequency of searches.

It does seems that online branding for your company will become even more important, since typing a company name in the search/navigation bar should automatically come up with your brand name as a URL suggestion.
