Search Engine Optimisation > So what is a search engine?

Posted by david.morris on April 30th, 2010

To give a better example of how search engine optimisation works, I thought that for this blog I would go right back to basics and discuss the nuts and bolts of a search engine.

A search engine is essentially made up of 2 sections. The back end consists of software that uses applications to collect information about web pages. This information is then indexed and stored in a database. The software has a user interface which is the front end and is what the user sees when they visit the search engine page. When a search term is entered, an algorithm examines the information in the back end database and returns links that appear to match the search term.

Search engine optimisation is important so that your site is optimised to its full potential for the keywords that you have decided to target. If this is done effectively, the search engines will collect the information from your site that relates to your keywords and store it in the back end database. This in turn means that your website will rank highly for these terms when they are searched for by a user.

As a leading Search Engine Optimisation agency, we know the ins and outs of search engine optimisation and how to use it to help your website rank well.
