Marvin’s view on the recession

Posted by admin on January 20th, 2009

If you’re of a certain age, like I am, you will remember with fondness Marvin the Paraniod Android from ‘The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy‘ and his unfortunate depressive and morose take on, well everything.
Well, I met Marvin the other day, in fact I met rather a lot of Marvins. No, it wasn’t at ‘The Restaurant at the End of the Universe’ it was at a speed networking event. The subjects of discussion were inevitably the recession and credit crunch. What surprised me was the almost entirely depressing and morose take on the current economic situation. ‘Hang on a minute’, I can hear you say,’the current economic situation is depressing and morose!’ Well, yes, to a degree. What really took me aback though, was the view held by all that the future for business was utterly bleak based on the premise that ‘no one wants to spend money anymore’.
This I’m afraid was a bad collective attack of the unfortunate ’scarcity mindset’, proponents of which take the view that ‘no one is spending money because there isn’t enough to go around’.
Well, I beg to differ. People, private consumers and businesses are still spending money, only now it’s on things they perceive they really need, rather than what they feel they want. So a rather vital strategy to thrive during the current recession is to convince consumers that they need whatever it is you have to offer.
So, as the recession starts to bite, two very different types of businesses will emerge. The first, led by Marvin’s, will struggle and become a victim of the recession and credit crunch. They will decide to cut back on marketing, postpone the development of their website and ignore the trend towards the expansion of business on the internet.
The second won’t just survive the recession, they will thrive during it. Against the economic trend their enquiries, sales and profits will rise. Those who run these businesses will understand that complacency is not an option. They will look to spend their time and money wisely in implementing online and offline strategies that will bring their businesses through the recession stronger and more profitable.
And what are these successful strategies? Well, having an online presence with an effective website design, trading online with an ecommerce website, Search Engine Optimisation to rank on the 1st page of Google and email marketing are just a few.
In essence what businesses need to do right now is to take the advice given on the front of ‘The Hitchhikers Guide’, which is of course, ‘Don’t Panic!’ Studio 2 Online are perfectly placed to help you avoid becoming a Marvin, and to help you out immediately, you can get a free copy of ‘10 Essential Strategies to Thrive During the Recession’ by ringing 0845 6187342.
