Vive la difference!

Posted by Giles on April 2nd, 2008

Women, and in particular mums are becoming the majority force online.

Online social networking and shopping online are becoming a part of mothers’ daily routine. According to a US survey by Experian in December 2007, 47% of mothers use the internet more since having a baby and only 16% use it less. In addition, 68% of mums regularly make purchases online, 28% of those surveyed had made a purchase in the last month.

On this side of the pond latest figures show that for the first time 2008 will see females outnumbering males in the UK internet population, with the trend set to continue.

It is estimated that 19.2 million females will go online this year, up by 6.7% over 2007 and accounting for 50.5% of the total internet users in the UK. By 2012 the demographic prediction is that women aged 18 to 49 will account for nearly 65% of the UK female internet connection, while the 55 plus demographics will claim a 25% share.

The message is clear for online businesses, ignore the ladies at your peril, but celebrate what is meant by ‘vive la difference!’

I know. Funny enough I was having a similar conversation with my friends at the weekend brain storming some crazy idea’s for new female focussed sites. Oh by the way, I’m a freelance organic search engine bloke based Nottingham looking for new challenges that likes dogs. I have one really important question, why does Sasha look like hong kong phooey?
