Did you know that the server your website is hosted on could have search engine optimisation implications which could be negatively affecting your rankings?

When your website is considered for listing on the different search engines, they check to see whether the IP address the site is being hosted on has been used for spamming. If it is, or has been before, then the search engines are likely to block your site from being listed and this obviously means that potential customers will not be able to find you.

If you end up in this unfortunate position then there are only really two options available to fix it and get your search engine optimisation campaign back on track; either contact the block list administrators, which is difficult and time consuming, or to move your website to a clean server.

If you want to get off to the best possible start with search engine optimisation and avoid any pitfalls , then give us a call now on 0116 275 8456 to speak to one of our team members.

There are two distinct strategies which have different overall aims for an SEO campaign.

Branding strategy > This is all about creating awareness of your company and not necessarily about driving sales. It’s about the volume of impressions, which in other words means that the more people type in a keyword and see your website, the greater the impression you create. Keywords that would be used for a branding strategy are broad terms such as ‘furniture’ or ‘jewellery’.

Acquisition strategy > When users have an idea of what they want to buy, they will type in a more specific phrase into a search engine. This is where you need an acquisition strategy to make these potential customers come to your site. To do this you will need to understand what customers are actually entering into the search bar. An acquisition strategy will use more narrow keywords such as ‘discounted mahogany garden bench’ or ‘gold crucifix necklaces’.

As a search engine marketing company, we know how to make a search engine optimisation campaign work to reach the goals of your business.

Whilst images can obviously make a website more attractive and improve its appearance, having too many pictures can cause search engine optimisation problems and affect your rankings.

Images are essential to a website, and although users will enjoy them, search engines will basically ignore them. So how can you overcome this and help make images work well for your search engine optimisation campaign? The answer is simple; ALT tags.

ALT tags are used as a textual description of an image and more importantly are readable to the search engine crawlers. So if the search engines are reading this text, it would be an ideal place to include your keywords. Remember though not to simply stuff your keywords into the tags, as this is viewed as a spamming technique.

As a leading Search Engine Optimisation agency, and the only SEMPO Platinum awarded SEO agency in the UK, we know the techniques to use, and not to use, to help your website rank well. If you wish to discuss the advantages an SEO campaign then give us a call now on 0116 275 8456 to speak to one of our team members or arrange a no obligation meeting.

Towards the end of last year, Google launched ‘Social Search’ so that you can easily find content from people within your social circle when you perform a search.

If you have a Google account, you can link your social network accounts to it, for example Twitter and FriendsFeed. When you perform a Google search, an extra set of search results are included at the bottom of the main results which are taken from all the people that are included in your social circle. The results will include Twitter feeds, blogs and status updates.

The idea behind this new feature is to make Google searches more personal and in line with the other social networks across the internet. If for example you are looking for opinions on a latest video game, your social search results could include your friends Twitter update about how great it is.

This new method of presenting search results could have implications to the way social networks are used for search engine optimisation and we will be keeping an eye on how this develops.

To give a better example of how search engine optimisation works, I thought that for this blog I would go right back to basics and discuss the nuts and bolts of a search engine.

A search engine is essentially made up of 2 sections. The back end consists of software that uses applications to collect information about web pages. This information is then indexed and stored in a database. The software has a user interface which is the front end and is what the user sees when they visit the search engine page. When a search term is entered, an algorithm examines the information in the back end database and returns links that appear to match the search term.

Search engine optimisation is important so that your site is optimised to its full potential for the keywords that you have decided to target. If this is done effectively, the search engines will collect the information from your site that relates to your keywords and store it in the back end database. This in turn means that your website will rank highly for these terms when they are searched for by a user.

As a leading Search Engine Optimisation agency, we know the ins and outs of search engine optimisation and how to use it to help your website rank well. If you wish to discuss the advantages an SEO campaign then give us a call now on 0116 275 8456 to speak to one of our team members or arrange a no obligation meeting.

For the majority of many search engine optimisation campaigns, the main goal is to rank highly on the number one search engine; Google. Here are a few pointers to help you get your site listed on the king of the search engines:

Google prefers not to be told about websites but find them. It is better if Google finds your website through links from outside sites, instead of being submitted straight to Google.

Google likes links on sites that it already knows about. A good technique to get listed in Google is to have a link to your site from a site that is already listed in Google, for example a press release on PRWeb.

One page indexed on Google is a gateway for the rest of your site. Make sure that the page indexed contains links to the rest of your site so that they can be indexed to.

A link from a high PageRank site should equal quicker ranking. Google will probably crawl your site quicker, and therefore index it quicker, if it finds a link to your site from a page that it ranks highly.

There are many different factors involved with ranking well in Google, and that’s without even mentioning its constantly changing search algorithms. If you want to make sure your site is performing as well as it should, contact our search engine optimisers to discuss the benefits a search engine optimisation campaign could have for your business.

You know that little blue bar at the top of your browser window? Chances are you never look at it but it is very important when it comes to search engine optimisation.

The text in the blue bar is the title of that specific webpage, and is the first impression a search engine will get of that page. Although the title is often ignored by users, it is important to not forget to optimise it for the search engines. When creating your titles for your pages, remember the following points:

The title should contain the theme of the webpage

It is normally the text that is displayed on the search engine result page

It should be 80-90 characters long

A title should be unique for each webpage

The placement of words is important, with your keywords located at the front

The title should be an informative summary of the page content

If you are looking for a search engine optimisation agency that can help with all aspects of improving your site for search engine optimisation, then give us a call now on 0116 275 8456 to speak to one of our team members.

Users can disable this setting by clicking on “Web History” but most users will probably not even realize what is happening. This is very bad for SEO.

Although Google may see this as offering the user a better experience, they could possibly be denying them the chance of viewing the best results for the term they are searching.

Duplicate content can come from a number of different places and the way each is dealt with varies…

Duplicate internal pages – If your site has duplicate pages, the best method is to choose one as the main copy, and then use a 301 redirect to take users to the same copy.

If you have the same paragraph of content located on a number of your sites pages, you can place it within an IFrame to reduce the chances of it being viewed as duplicate conent by the search engines.

After you have sent out a press release, it could possibly appear on another site and be counted as duplicate content on your site. Make sure you are credited as the original author of the article to avoid this happening.

I mentioned in my last post that there were rumours that Google may use page load time as an indicator over the next year or so. This may have been introduced sooner than we think or Google may be highlighting these issues to site owner in order for them to resolve them, before it is implemented properly.

Those of you who use Google webmaster tools will have noticed the introduction of the “Site Performance” section. This highlights average page load times over last few months and offers suggestions on how to improve the problems that it has highlighted.

The “Crawl Stats” section has already been a part of webmaster tools for quite a while. You can view a graph which shows stats on the number of pages crawled per day and page download time over the past 90 days

This is something that you should definitely keep an eye on . I noticed that the rankings for a couple of sites dropped last month. The crawl stats showed that a lot more pages were crawled in October than last month and that the bots spent a lot more time downloading pages last month when compared to October.
