Blogging in a winter wonderland!
Posted by dani cass on February 2nd, 2009
I’m sure by now everyone is as fed up of the snow as I am (and dreading the journey home!), and so, despite the numerous ‘blog about the snow’ requests from my colleagues, this will be a snow free zone!. Instead, I’ve decided to blog about the much happier webby type things that have caught my eye today.
Firstly, I was very pleased to read that Woolies is to be saved in the form of an online store! After poor high street sales, the 100 year old company was forced into administration and closed the last of its stores in January, but after the phenomenal rise in online sales, Shop Direct (which has around 5 million online customers) has purchased not only Ladybird, but also the Woolworths brand.
Woolworths is due to relaunch online in the summer, and will be announcing its new product range over the next few months. This will be a great opportunity to see how the high street compares to ecommerce!
Now on to something guaranteed to make anyone with a flashy computer and super fast internet connection smile. Check out this Youtube video of a 1981 news report showing a man literally dialling up for the news to be sent to his computer! Then some poor guy at the newspaper office has to type the newspaper to him (minus pictures) and all for a lot more than the cost of a newspaper!! But there was a plus – it only took 2 hours to download the newspaper!! http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=5WCTn4FljUQ
And finally, the government is planning to have broadband in every home by 2012! The aim is to make sure everyone has a fast enough connection to be able to watch video’s online creating a digital Britain.
I only really discovered ‘online tv’ yesterday, and honestly it has created a bit of a monster because I now know way too much about Paris Hilton thanks to her BBF (British Best Friend), and I was able to catch up all those missed episodes of Eastenders (and for anyone that is dying of anticipation – apparently Danielle tells Stacey about Ronnie this week!).
The unfortunate thing about this plan is there is no mention of who will be providing the computers to go with the broadband, especially since everyone is watching the pennies thanks to the mess they have made of the economy!
I guess if all else fails, we could invest in one of those awesome ‘dial up’ computers in the Youtube video!!
