Forget the Oscars and Academy Awards, this coming March sees the Ninth Annual Weblog awards’ announcement of the best blog of 2008.

The Internet is a vast pool of knowledge and opinions, much of this information presented in the form of blogs, many of which draw large volumes of traffic to a website as the various topics covered ensure greater coverage in search engine results.

The nominations not only cover categories for topics such as Technology, Food, Fashion, Travel and Politics, but also nominations for the best regional blog and the best blog application (my vote is for Wordpress!).

There are actually quite a few rather interesting, and amusing websites listed as the finalists, but there are also quite a few that probably don’t belong in a blog of the year contest! A slightly cynical part of me wonders if these blogs were popular before they applied to this contest, or whether the traffic has been generated by the event itself (and the subsequent advertisement in the Metro!), but it does demonstrate two very important things about blogs:

1. Having links to your blog in various places online is very important because it makes sure people can find it! Not only are people more likely to follow the links but, Spiders crawling the pages will also follow the links and this will help with your Google rankings

2. Making sure your blog is well advertised will increase visitor activity. Successful advertising of your blog can be achieved without spending a penny (or any other currency). Many of the most successful bloggers have social networking profiles, this allows people to not only discover the blog but also share it with their friends, and there really is no better form of advertising than viral marketing!

Have fun blogging and don’t forget, if you get to the heady heights of Weblog of the Year, their is a grand prize of….. wait for it….. 2009 US cents! ($20.09 or £14.19), that may not sound like a lot, but as my dad always says, when he was a lad you could buy a house for that and still have change! Not much help in a recession but still amusing!
